From engineering and design to international art
Ghandhi Daniel’s career reflects a unique combination of artistic vision, technical ability, and dedication to the international promotion of Haitian art.
An early international exhibition
Ghandhi was among the pioneering Haitian artists whose work portrayed the image and identity of Haiti while exploring the relationship between Haiti and the United States.
During this period, he met United States President Gerald R. Ford.
He later joined American art advocate Boris Kravitz, who introduced his work at the Haitian Art Company in Key West, Florida.
The exhibition, held in November 1980, was a major success and marked an important stage in Ghandhi’s international artistic career.
A global commitment to Haitian art
Since 1982, Ghandhi has worked in close collaboration with the Haitian artistic community to organize and produce exhibitions for audiences around the world.
In 1990, he met Danielle Mitterrand of France Libertés and later Jacques Chirac, then Mayor of Paris.
These relationships contributed to the development of a major promotional movement for Haitian art in France and internationally.
Engineering and original design in New York
From a young age, Ghandhi demonstrated two remarkable abilities: mathematics and design. Building on these talents, he pursued a career in civil engineering while continuing to develop his artistic practice.
Between 1985 and 1987, he worked with Ruben Gold on the remodeling of S.O.B.’s on Varick Street in New York City.
The project featured an original design created by Ghandhi Daniel and involved his collaboration with Ruben, Debbie, and Larry Gold.

Bringing Haitian art to international leaders
At International House, Ghandhi spoke with United States President Gerald R. Ford about Toussaint Auguste, one of the pioneering figures of Haitian art.
Toussaint Auguste belonged to the first generation of painters associated with the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince and contributed to the celebrated murals of the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
The conversation reflected Ghandhi’s commitment to preserving the legacy of Haitian artists and bringing their cultural contributions to the attention of influential international leaders.

L’Art Haïtien au Quotidien
One of the collaboration’s major exhibitions, “L’Art Haïtien au Quotidien,” was held at the Salle Pierre Cardin on Avenue Gabriel in Paris on October 17, 1990.
Danielle Mitterrand invited prominent figures from French society and government to attend the event. Pierre and Christine Cardin were reportedly among the exhibition’s first buyers.
Distinguished Haitian guests
Distinguished guests from Haiti included architect Leslie Voltaire, representing the Haitian government, and Issa El-Saieh, a prominent Haitian gallerist, art collector, and cultural advocate.
A continuing cultural initiative
With the support of her husband, French President François Mitterrand, Danielle Mitterrand helped extend the initiative through additional Haitian art exhibitions in Cannes, Toulouse, Nantes, and other French cities.
This collaboration contributed significantly to the recognition and promotion of Haitian art throughout France.
Recognized in the United States
His work has been recognized at the federal level in the United States, with a consecutive multi-year exhibition presence at 26 Federal Plaza, New York City, where Haitian art was highly praised by Administrator Chief William J. Diamond.

In three months, Haitian art was exhibited in three different countries — Japan, France, and the Dominican Republic — a rare achievement that speaks to the international reach of the movement Ghandhi helped build.
From New York City to Buenos Aires
At an exhibition held at Lever House in New York City in June 1988, Ghandhi met Mr. Wenceslao Bunge, a prominent Argentine businessman who was reportedly a friend of former U.S. Secretary of State William P. Rogers.
Bunge acquired one of the exhibition’s most valuable paintings. The artwork was later delivered in excellent condition to his residence in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
